| The cicada is an insect that emerges once every 13 or 17 years. Cicadas spend 99% of their lives underground eating nutrients from plant roots. Between May and July, the fully-grown cicadas burrow tunnels in the soil and emerge to the surface. Once in the open air, the adult cicadas find a mate and lay eggs. Adult cicadas only live two to 4 weeks! The newly hatched cicadas immediately drop to the soil and bury into the ground to stay for 13 or 17 years! |
