| All 27 moons of Uranus are named after characters in William Shakespeare’s plays! A few of the moons’ names are Juliet, Ariel, and Cupid. The first two moons were discovered in 1787 by Sir William Herschel. (This astronomer also discovered Uranus.) These moons were known as I and II. Two years later, moon III and IV were discovered. The astronomer’s son wanted to give the moon’s names of Shakespearean characters. Over the next two centuries, the other 23 moons were discovered. The Shakespearean theme was continued. |
